I was first invited into the beautiful Moira Hughes studio in Paddington when I was working as Fashion Director of Bride To Be. It was 2014 and Moira had just opened her boutique after honing her skills with some of London and Ireland's most renowned bridal designers.
The thing that struck me about Moira's gowns was her attention to detail and the beautiful silhouettes thanks to her innovative use of Parisienne corsetry.
Fast forward to the release of Moira's 2018 'The One' collection, which the designer describes as her most special to date.
Fashioned from exclusive silks and tulles from Europe the collection focuses on a woman's individual femininity. Inspired by female icons such as Audrey Hepburn and Grace Kelly, it features soft silhouettes, translucent blush tones and fallen straps - plus hidden details which are revealed as the bride moves. Feminine shapes contrast beautifully with bold lace and intricate embellishment.
Drawing inspiration from her own wedding last year, Moira says, "the collection embodies timeless romance with modern detailing. Perfect for who the Moira Hughes bride has evolved to be." In this exclusive chat with Moira, the designer talks us through what makes this collection so special, plus reveals her exciting plans to take the brand international.
TAKE 5... With Moira Hughes
What was the inspiration behind this collection?
I was very heavily inspired by my own wedding last year. The One collection embodies that rush of excitement and tingling feeling of anticipation you get just before you walk down the aisle. I wanted the collection to be indulgent and beyond all expectations. You only get to wear this dress once and you want it to be remembered. The collection is feminine and empowering, which is how I felt on my wedding day. I was also inspired by female icons such as Audrey Hepburn and Grace Kelly by incorporating hidden details which are revealed only when the bride moves or walks.
How has the Moira Hughes brand evolved since you launched your label?
The Moira Hughes brand has evolved to reflect the elegant, timeless bride who wants to really feel like the best version of herself on her wedding day. Each collection is heavily inspired by the brides I meet and since having my own moment as a bride I feel that emotion has really come to life in the style and movement of our 2018 collection. In the beginning we were often described as ‘Australias most romantic wedding gowns’ and that is still at the core of our designs.
Why is this collection so special to you?
This collection was the first one I designed since getting married myself. I think your perspective on wedding gowns and weddings in general changes once you've experienced your own. I can fully understand and appreciate what a bride goes through when choosing her dress and how special and important the whole process and journey is. This dress is the most important dress any woman gets to wear, given they have the opportunity. I put my heart and soul into every single gown as I want every bride to look as perfect as she can be.
What would you say sets this collection apart from others?
This is the biggest collection we have ever revealed at one time which really gave me scope to design a variety of styles and silhouettes. This collection instantly caught the eye of brides around the world and for the first time we have the honour of showcasing at New York Bridal Week which is really exciting!
What design details really highlight the new designs?
This collection highlights a woman's individual femininity with soft silhouettes, translucent blush tones and fallen straps. The contrast of feminine shapes with bold lace, strong features and modern classics means that it is the details in the collection which make it really stand out. This collection uniquely combines the timeless silhouette of a wedding gown with the modern, individual touches defining of a Moira Hughes gown. It is the small and carefully thought out details that elevate it to one of my most bold and elegant collections.
